The S7-200 series is integrated, with the CPU module, I/O module, and power module all in one module, known as the CPU module; The S7-300 series has separate modules for power supply, I/O, CPU, and rails.

In fact, the S7-200 series can also be expanded, and some small systems do not require additional customized modules. The S7-200 series modules also include signal, communication, position control, and other modules.

The S7-200 series has no concept of a rack and is referred to as a guide rail; For the convenience of decentralized control, the modules of the S7-300 series are installed on a guide rail, called a rack, which corresponds to an expansion rack and is also reflected in the software.

The modules on the same rack of the S7-200 series are connected through the data connector directly above the modules; The S7-300 is connected through a U-shaped bus connector at the bottom.

The I/O input of the S7-300 series is connected to the front connector, which is then connected to the signal module instead of directly connecting the I/O signal to the signal module. This allows for the replacement of the signal module without rewiring.

Some CPUs of the S7-300 series 2DP have a profibus interface.
