The central processing unit (CPU) is generally composed of a controller, arithmetic unit, and registers, and these circuits are integrated in a chip.
The CPU is connected with the storage unit and the input and output interface circuit through the data bus, the address bus and the control bus. Like a general computer, the CPU is the core of the PLC. It commands the PLC to work in an orderly manner according to the functions given by the system program in the PLC. The user program and data are stored in the memory in advance. When the PLC is in the running mode, the CPU executes the user program in a cyclic scan mode.
The main tasks of the CPU are: control the reception and storage of user programs and data; use scanning to receive on-site status or data through I/O components. Co-storage person enters the image register or data memory; diagnoses the working failure of the PLC internal circuit and the grammatical error in the programming; after the PLC enters the running state, it reads the user instructions from the memory one by one, and performs data according to the tasks specified by the instructions after the command interpretation Transmission, logic or arithmetic operations, etc.; according to the result of the operation, the status of the relevant flag bit and the content of the output image register are updated, and then functions such as output control, tabulation and printing or data communication are realized through the output component. Different types of PLC have different CPU chips, some adopt general-purpose CPU chips, and some adopt special CPU chips designed by manufacturers. The performance of the CPU chip is related to the ability and speed of the PLC to process control signals. The higher the number of CPUs, the greater the amount of information processed by the system and the faster the computing speed. The function of PLC is improved and enhanced with the development of CPU chip technology.
