Happy Dragon Boat Festival!!! Wishing everyone a happy holiday, happiness, and good health!

The Origin and Customs of the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival( Duānwǔ Jié), celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, is one of China’s most traditional festivals. Its origins are linked to Qu Yuan(340–278 BC), a patriotic poet of the Warring States Period who drowned himself in the Miluo River to protest corruption. To honor him, people threw rice into the water to feed his spirit and raced boats to scare away fish—leading to today’s customs.

Key Customs
1. Dragon Boat Racing– Teams paddle to the beat of drums, reenacting the rescue attempt for Qu Yuan.
2. Eating Zongzi – Sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, originally meant to feed Qu Yuan’s spirit.
3. Hanging Mugwort & Calamus – These herbs are placed on doors to ward off evil spirits and disease.
4. Wearing Scented Sachets– Colorful pouches filled with herbs are worn for protection and good luck.
5. Drinking Realgar Wine– An old tradition to repel insects and evil (now less common due to toxicity).
